“Coordinating Course: Finance Data Analysis and Intelligent Trading” Teaches You How to Trade Smarter and Learn Faster in the Stock Market

In the fall semester of 2020, the FJU Department of Finance and International Business and the Department of Information Management opened a new course called “Finance Data Analysis and Intelligent Trading,” inviting two technology financing experts from Sys Just Corp. to be guest speakers and judges of the final projects. Professor Han (韓千山) and Professor Lin (林文修) from the College of Management are two teachers who coordinated in designing the course's lessons and contents. The course, according to Han, “aims to impart knowledge in the field of finance and at the same time incorporate practical analyzing systems and coding techniques to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of stock trading.”

“Sys Just Corp.'s XQ trading system, which our students are learning to use, not only contains abundant financial information and trading strategies,” said Han, “but is also gaining popularity in the world of finance due to its advanced functions.” In fact, two of the most fascinating functions of this trading system are that it allows users to backtrack performance of their trading strategies on previous data and perform pseudo-real-time transactions in the actual market. By doing so, students won’t have to waste time and money on the stock market just to learn a painful lesson. “Don’t pay the tuition on the actual battlefield,” Han often says in his lectures. “Make your college tuition fee worthwhile by learning as many lessons as you can beforehand.”

Midway through the semester and proceeding to the final evaluations, students of the course are busy working on their final projects. In their final projects, they have to develop one or multiple trading strategies, transform them into codes, then compare results or show the effectiveness of their strategies using the simulating functions provided in the XQ trading system. The goal might seem simple, yet the process can be otherwise. Several students have been struggling with synchronizing different strategies into a new combination that actually works. “You combine all those cool strategies you learned in class thinking they could be quite useful, but when you test them on real data, the outcome rarely meets your expectations,” Lui, a student of the course said. “You have to adjust, adjust, and readjust just like doing any sort of experiment,” said another student. However, despite the challenges, most students find the contents of the course very practical and up to date.
In a time when technology grows and advances so rapidly, both teachers and students are facing new challenges incorporating new forms of technology into lecture contents and studies. New forms of technology such as E-commerce, artificial intelligence, intelligent trading, and 5G internet penetrate our daily lives as well as the workplace. In terms of the importance of knowledge and skills related to these emerging technologies, Han said while mastering them all is unnecessary, being able to apply and incorporate them into one’s own expertise is crucial. This is why Professor Han and many other teachers at Fu Jen Catholic University are so enthusiastic about cooperating with experts in the field and designing interdisciplinary courses.
